Social media addiction is a behavioural disorder in which young adults are fascinated by social media and cannot reduce or stop using online media despite the obvious negative consequences and serious drawbacks. Although many adolescents engage in some form of online media on a daily basis (including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, tiktok ,YouTube, Vine, Snapchat, and video games), adolescent social media addiction is characterized by a combination of excessive media consumption, an increasing Reliance on social media as a way to feel better, and the inability to stop or control this behaviour despite loss in friendships, reduced physical social engagement, and negative effects at school.
Research shows that excessive gaming in young people can increase feelings of social isolation which leads to depression, anxiety and various other mental health ailments. Playing video games every day wastes 7 to 8 hours of time.
