“Expect Amazing” — with this slogan the Emirate of Qatar was appointed to host the FIFA World Cup 2022 in December 2010.
Back in 2010, Qatar was chosen as the 2022 World Cup host, beating out proposals from the US, South Korea, Japan, and Australia.
FIFA, the governing body of football, raised various issues during the bidding process, which presented challenges. These included the absence of infrastructure and the region’s extreme summer heat, when World Cup competitions are often conducted.
Although some sources even referred to Qatar’s proposal as “high risk,” it nevertheless won with 14 votes to the United States’ eight in the final round of voting.
The US Department of Justice claimed as recently as March 2020 that bribes were accepted by high-ranking officials during the voting process to choose Russia and Qatar as the tournament hosts for the 2018 and 2022 events. Russian officials denied the allegations, and officials from Qatar called them “false” in a statement to CNN.
For years, the DOJ has been looking into claims of corruption in FIFA and international soccer. More than twenty convictions have been made thus far, and other cases are still pending.
FIFA stated that it “supports any investigations into alleged acts of criminal wrongdoing surrounding either domestic or international football events and will continue to provide full cooperation .
“FIFA is constantly monitoring these inquiries and every associated development in the ongoing legal proceedings in the US and elsewhere in the world.
It’s crucial to note that FIFA has been given victim status in the criminal proceedings in the US and that senior FIFA executives communicate frequently with the US Department of Justice.
FIFA was given victim status by US prosecutors because they believed that the global governing body of football had nearly been taken over by a number of dishonest people.
Human rights criticism
Ahead of the World Cup, attention has also been focused on Qatar’s human rights record, notably with regard to the wellbeing of migrant workers.
Given the inadequate infrastructure Qatar had when it was chosen to host the World Cup, seven new stadiums, new hotels, and upgrades to the nation’s airport, rail system, and motorways have all been built in preparation for the event.
As a result, Qatar has become dependent on its migrant labour, which Amnesty International estimates makes up 90% of the country’s workforce.
The International Labor Organization has recognized changes like Qatar becoming the first country in the region to adopt a non-discriminatory minimum wage, which FIFA president Gianni Infantino has said he has witnessed a “fantastic evolution” in.
In the years running up to the World Cup, Qatar’s state-sponsored discrimination against LGBTQ persons has also drawn criticism.
Sex between men is prohibited in Qatar and is punished by up to three years in prison. A Human Rights Watch study from last month detailed instances of Qatari security personnel arbitrarily detaining LGBT individuals and subjecting them to “ill-treatment in detention” as recently as September.
According to a statement the SC provided to CNN, it was guilty of the crime.
The statement read, “There has never been a problem and every event has been delivered securely.”
“Everyone is welcome in Qatar, but because we are a conservative nation, it is not acceptable to show affection in public, regardless of orientation. All we want is that people to respect our way of life.
The maybe most glaring indication that this World Cup is different
FIFA declared on Friday that no alcohol will be served inside of stadiums, and on Monday it cautioned captains from seven nations that they would receive yellow cards if they donned armbands endorsing equality and against prejudice.
All 32 captains will have the chance to wear this armband at the World Cup, FIFA said in a statement earlier on Monday. The “No Discrimination” campaign also has a special armband.
“For FIFA final competitions, the captain of each side must wear the captain’s armband given by FIFA,” according to FIFA’s equipment requirements.
